“Grieving is an aspect of love, and healthy grieving is an act of love and remembering love.” ~William DeFoore

The death of a beloved sets our minds in a whirlwind. We try to protect ourselves from the enormity of anger, shock, and denial in an attempt to interrupt and even stop the deep anguish of grief. This instinctive reaction to pain is normal. It is when these responses dominate the grief process that our grief never truly heals.

It is only when we rely on and focus on our love for what is gone that we find the courage and strength to move into the pain, release sorrow, and complete the grief process.

Here are seven qualities of healthy grieving

Rituals and Ceremonies – One of the first rituals we often encounter is the funeral or memorial service. This public expression of honoring life and acknowledging death should not be ignored. Rituals can legitimize grief, provide a safe space to express emotion, receive support, and reaffirm that you are not alone in your grief.

“It’s all right to cry. Crying takes the hurt out of you.” These words from a childhood song have stayed with me long into adulthood. Deep, long sobbing is a powerful way to release emotion. Quietly allowing a few tears to roll down your cheek is a good start but won’t be near as helpful as a really good cry. Research tells us that crying flushes stress hormones and other toxins out of our system. When you sob, you take in many quick breaths of cool air which will help cool your brain. A cool brain is a happy brain.

Give your emotions a voice – Find safe places to express your emotions. Talk to a good friend, write in a journal, join a support group, exercise – whatever activity feels best for you. Your “stuffed” emotions are almost guaranteed to come back and bite you at some time. Avoiding emotions could also lead to anxiety, depression, and memory problems.

Shifting Perspectives – It may not always be easy to replace a negative thought with a positive one, but when you do, it will help. A sweet memory that brings a smile to your face will help you begin to see an uplifting vision for your future.

Self-Care – Grieving is hard work, so being sure to take care of your physical well-being is a must. Eat healthy foods, exercise, and rest whenever you can.

Finding Balance – Grieving is an active process that takes energy. What you find nourishing may be quite different than what another family member prefers. There are many ways to nourish your mind, body, and soul. Find a balance between focusing on day-to-day tasks and allowing yourself to grieve. Balance the amount of time you spend alone with the time you spend with friends. Balance asking others for help with caring for yourself.

Making Time for Introspection and Reflection – The loss of someone or something that has an important place in our lives can make us feel like the world’s been tossed upside down. Writing in a journal can be one of the most powerful ways to cope and heal. Instead of ignoring the reality of grief, journaling helps you think through the many feelings and emotions., which is important in creating a sense of peace.

According to the World Health Organization, over 80% of adults surveyed are feeling significant stress after the 2-year pandemic anniversary. The statistics for children and teens are even more alarming. Your pet has an innate ability to reduce stress. Adding a pet to your family can decrease the tension, arguments, anger, frustration, and more that come with increased stress. Some people form stronger bonds with their pets than they do with other humans. Dogs and humans who interact with each other get a jolt of oxytocin – the Love Hormone. Think about how your “best friend” reacts when you come home from work, even after a hard day that has left you grumpy. They are always happy to see us! Everyone needs that emotional connection. Pets love us unconditionally, and they never judge us. Pets also get the benefit of living in a loving environment for which, they return that love in abundance.

Did you know that smiling can boost your mood and happiness level? It sure does – even if it’s forced! Those crazy cat antics that abound on YouTube don’t let us down! A kitten’s and puppy’s playfulness are usually good for a laugh or two as well. I have a pet I call “Digger Dude.” He might be a shrimp; I’m not sure. But he is SO much fun to watch!
Take Back Control of Your Life After A Time of Chaos

Slow down. Sometimes the desire for closure is so strong that you might jump to hasty conclusions about your experience and yourself. Give yourself time to sort through your memories and discover their meaning.

Practice self-care. Protecting your physical and mental wellbeing will help you to make sound decisions and gain the clarity you need to move forward. Eat a healthy diet, exercise regularly, and get 7 to 8 hours of sleep each night. Spend time each day hanging out with family and friends and doing activities you love.

Start a journal. Recording your daily thoughts and activities can help you deal with stress too. You’ll be able to spot recurring patterns and see where you’re making progress. To stay on track, try writing at the same time each day, like first thing in the morning or before bed.

Be flexible. Life is full of sudden changes. Learning to adapt increases your chances for success. Set new goals and let go of regrets. Cultivate your curiosity.

Consider counseling. Talking with a therapist could help if you’ve tried to recover from your breakup, but you’re still struggling. A caring professional can help you see your options more objectively and support you while you navigate through a difficult time.

Remember that you are worthy of love and respect. It may take time and effort to heal from a loss or other life crisis, but it is possible. You matter! You Count!

Box Breathing – Also known as 4-square breathing, this exercise helps to clear your mind, relax your body, and improve your focus. Not only is it highly effective, but it’s also quick to learn and easy to do.

Close your eyes (if you are in a place where you can) and breathe in through your nose while slowly counting to 4. Pay attention to the air filling your lungs.

Hold your breath for a slow count of 4. Slowly exhale to a count of 4.

Repeat. It’s best to repeat this for 4 minutes.

It’s as easy as that! I find this exercise especially helpful when I’m in meetings that don’t go as smoothly as I wanted. No one knows I’m doing it.

Gratitude – It’s true that perspective makes a huge difference in life. For this exercise, spend the first 5 minutes of your day writing at least 5 things you are grateful for at work. Don’t make this hard. If you have to be thankful for the chair you’re sitting in, go for it. Being grateful can change your day.

Build Deeper Connections – even virtually – Studies show that connecting with others increases resiliency. Think about being with your friends. Did you smile? Being with friends gives us a sense of belonging, allows us to our authentic selves, and boosts self-esteem. Next time you’re in a meeting change up your introductions. Instead of sharing what you do, focus on who you are. If you’re meeting with a group of people who already know each other, just re-introduce yourselves. Share your favorite vacation spot, or something unique about yourself that others don’t know. This is a great activity that any team (new or established) can do to get to know each other better.

Befriend Your Triggers – What are the things or people at work that send your blood pressure through the roof? Choose one that happens often and over the course of a week, pay attention to sensations, gestures, postures you embody when this comes up. Notice the part of your body that’s involved. Does your chest tighten? Do your hands ball up in a fist? Your face turn read or your breathing speed up? Keep a list to help you pay attention. When you have identified your usual response, determine how you would rather feel. Look for places in your life where you already experience that state. Get really clear about the difference between the two states. Then, at least 3 times a day, consciously interrupt your trigger state and replace it with your best self. In time it will become your go-to response.

Explore Your Strengths – Resilience is not just about finding areas to improve. Recognizing and acknowledging those areas you excel in is also a great way to build resilience. Your strengths are something you can build on to go from good to great. In the next 5 minutes write a list of all your strengths. Don’t stop writing and don’t judge yourself. Choose at least 6 that stand out for you and create a mantra. Every day, before your workday starts, repeat this mantra to yourself 10 times.

Here’s an example to get you thinking: “I am a bold and courageous woman who never quits. I have an adventurous spirit that takes me to incredible places. And I always turn chaos to stars!”

Want to learn more? Schedule a complimentary chat with Lee at www.coachrev.com/contact
